Intervention "prevention of herd disease" at the Agricultural High School of Carmejane

Within the framework of their tutored project in partnership with the FRGDS (Fédération Régionale des Groupements de Défense Sanitaire), three students in their last year of Biological Engineering, Agronomy option, at the IUT of Aix-Marseille in Digne-les-Bains, gave a conference at the agricultural high school of Carmejane to present the Abortive Ovine Salmonellosis (Salmonella Abortusovis) with the aim of a preventive approach to a specialized class. The FRGDS is an organization with a sanitary vocation, mainly in charge of the prophylaxis of farms and the management of herd movements during transhumance for example.

Ovine Abortive Salmonellosis, also known as OAS, is an infectious and contagious disease of sheep, manifesting itself essentially by abortions and by the death of young contaminated lambs. This disease is concentrated in the southern region and causes great damage when a flock is infected. Few really efficient treatments exist, which makes it necessary to act in prevention of this disease.

The students were able to present their project to students in the final year of the CGEA program (Agricultural Management and Operations), most of whom will be future farmers, so that they could understand the issues related to this disease, which ravages sheep flocks in the southern region and causes abortions.

This approach allowed the three students to test and to concretize their prevention project and to transmit the result of their 2 years of research to an informed public. Faced with these students interested in the quality service, they also answered questions and took into account the remarks of these future professionals under the eye of the PA (Agricultural Production) teacher, a partner without whom this project would not have been successful.

After this intervention, the high school expressed its desire to renew this experience on other agronomic subjects.
